Ekomobilni - Case Study

Ekomobilni

Context

I worked as the lead software engineer, alongside a graphic designer and a project manager. We built Ekomobilni - a web game and learning platform. We created it for the Wiedza dla Regionu Association under a government grant. The goal was to support environmental education in schools, according to the school curriculum.

Problem

Teachers want engaging and active lessons, but they rarely have time to create custom materials from scratch. Organizing traditional field games takes too much time, content planning, and physical preparation.

Teachers needed a complete, ready-to-use solution. It had to offer pre-made educational content, require minimal preparation time, and be fun for students while fitting the curriculum.

During initial workshops, three main constraints emerged:

  • Teachers have little time to prepare lessons
  • Internet connections in schools are often weak, and students have few devices
  • Teachers feel anxious about complex software and technical setups

The main challenge was to deliver a complete educational game that is fun for students, but requires almost zero preparation and technical setup for teachers.

Solution

We built Ekomobilni as a web application. It runs directly in mobile browsers, so users do not need to download an app. This removes setup friction and works on all student devices.

The system connects the digital app with physical school spaces:

  • Simple Setup: Teachers create an account, enter a game name, pick a difficulty level, and set the team count. The system generates a print-ready PDF with QR codes and team access codes.

  • No Installation: Students use their own phone browsers. They enter their team code and scan the physical QR codes hidden around the school.
  • Live Progress: Scanning a code opens one of seven virtual lands. When students answer questions about energy and conservation, the screen shows a polluted area turning into a clean environment. A live leaderboard tracks scores.
  • Data Privacy: Because the users are children, the app does not collect players personal data. The app assigns a color name to each team at random. The app saves the teacher notes (such as who is a member of each team) only on the local device of the teacher.

Tech Stack

  • Main App: Next.js, Chakra UI, MongoDB, Prisma, NextAuth, Mailjet
  • Marketing Site: Astro, Tailwind CSS, DaisyUI

Outreach

I ran a mass cold email campaign reaching all public educational institutions in Poland (which is compliant with GDPR). It passed spam filters and created strong interest, leading many schools to contact us and participate.
